Cooking with firewood, coal, dung cakes, and traditional fuels has long been a health hazard for millions of rural households in India, particularly affecting women and children. To address this issue and promote clean cooking fuel, the Government of India launched the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) on 1 May 2016.
The scheme aims to provide free LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) connections to women from economically weaker households, thereby improving health, reducing indoor air pollution, and empowering women.
For UPSC, MPSC, SSC, Banking, Railways, and other competitive examinations, PMUY is an important topic under Social Welfare, Women Empowerment, Environment, and Governance.
