1. ๐ INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS โ INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE 2026
TODAY โ 21 SEPTEMBER
The International Day of Peace is observed today, 21 September.
The 2026 theme is:
โInvest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Dayโ
The UN’s message stresses that peace requires sustained investment in diplomacy, dialogue, negotiation, human rights, social protection and inclusive development.
Why important for UPSC?
Peace is not merely the absence of armed conflict.
A broader understanding includes:
Peace + Development + Human Rights + Inclusion + Rule of Law
Static Linkage
UN General Assembly
The International Day of Peace was established by the UN General Assembly in 1981; in 2001, the General Assembly designated it as a period of non-violence and ceasefire.
GS-II

2. โ๏ธ SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY โ RAPP-8 FUEL LOADING
๐ฎ๐ณ Major nuclear-power milestone
The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has begun Initial Fuel Loading (IFL) at Unit 8 of the Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (RAPP-8) at Rawatbhata, Rajasthan.
The process began at 15:18 on 19 September 2026, following clearance from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) and completion of safety evaluations, system-integrity audits and site-readiness reviews.
Reactor
700 MWe indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR)
RAPP-8 is the fourth reactor in the series of 16 indigenous 700-MWe PHWRs planned in India.
What comes next?
Initial Fuel Loading
โ
First Approach to Criticality (FAC)
โ

| KAPS-4 | Kakrapar, Gujarat | Commercial operation |
| RAPP-7 | Rawatbhata, Rajasthan | Commercial operation |
| RAPP-8 | Rawatbhata, Rajasthan | Commissioning stage |
The Department of Atomic Energy had earlier identified RAPP-8 as a 700-MW indigenous PHWR expected to become operational in 2026.
UPSC Concept
PHWR = Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor
India’s PHWR programme traditionally uses heavy water as moderator/coolant and natural uranium-based fuel technology.

27.43 crore consumers
or around 89.9% have already completed authentication.
Why introduce it?
The stated objectives include:
- Preventing duplicate connections
- Reducing diversion
- Targeting subsidies
- Improving transparency
- Ensuring genuine beneficiaries receive subsidised LPG
Important governance issue
This creates a classic UPSC balance:
Targeted welfare
vs
Exclusion risk
Potential challenges
